Polyurethane foams are typically separated into two categories: ‘Ether’ and ‘Ester’, both of which are Open Celled Foams They are used extensively in gasketing applications to fill voids, as shock absorption for various packaging applications and cushioning. These materials are also available in Conductive or Anti-Static types as well as Retictulated for Filtration, Flocked for cases and Felted for wicking.

Types

Ether - Is the most common of the Urethane Foams. It provides excellent comfort and elasticity, while having an increased heat and water resistance. They are used in furniture, bedding, automotive, gaskets, seals, and case inserts.

Ester - While Ethers are better for comfort, Esters have better acoustical properties. They have increased mechanical strength, better shock absorption, and increased chemical resistance.

Other Notable Definitions

Flocked -  Flocked foam is an added value product for custom cases, packaging and displays. The material is produced in a converting process whereby short fibers are bonded to the foam’s surface so as to look and feel like velvet. It is well known for Jewelry packaging.

Felted - Felted Foam is the operation of compressing standard urethane foam to concentrate pore uniformity. It is mostly used in micro filtration, metering, wicking, gasketing, support backing, cushioning, and sound absorption.

Reticulated - Reticulated foams are produced when cell walls are removed by chemical or thermal reactions, thus leaving the skeletal structure open. They are used for filter foams, acoustical panels, and for controlled liquid delivery.
